Michael Loewe paints a full and vivid picture of the Han period (202 B.C. - A.D. 220). He describes the life of the peasants working the land, as well as the inhabitants of the towns-the rich, the tradesmen and artisans, the courtiers and officials, and the beggars and criminals.

He examines their position in society, their work, their stints of government service - either as statutory labourers or in the army, their religious practices, and the elaborate hierarchy of institutions and civil servants who enforced the decisions of the imperial government.ģ
